Community Building

So far we have developed two ways of community-building

Poster Parties & Bookmark/Card Presentations

What are Poster Parties?

Poster parties were initially conceived of as are gatherings of women (and occasionally men) to play and raise money for the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. We stil give the proceeds of the posters to the Grandmothers' Campaign but are open to the possibility that you may also want to use this as an opportunity to support another worthy community cause either locally or internationally. Some of our favourites are

Why should I participate in a Poster Party?

They help build Community, encourage Creativity  and let you participate in a good Cause. And they are just plain fun.

What do you do at a Poster Party?

Each participant is given a 25 ½ x 6 ¼ inch poster with 11 female figures and 2 children’s figures on it. The goal is to cut out clothes from paper and to dress the figures during the party. The process takes about 8 hours including a lunch break so it is a long party.

Is there a fee for this?

Yes. First there is the supply fee of $10 per person. This covers the cost of the posters which the participants get to keep. The supply fee also helps to cover the cost of the Facilitator's Kit. Beth or any other facilitator will charge $500 plus travel expenses for running a poster party. Beth will donate $10 x each participant to the Stephen Lewis Foundation's Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign and the rest of her fee to one of the comunities which we support  or possibly to one of yours. The organizers of the event may have to charge an additional fee in order to cover the cost of the venue or they may want to charge more in order to make a larger donation to the cause for which they are raising awareness.

How do I have a Poster Party?

First you need the poster kits which we will sell to you for $20 each. ($10 of this will be donated to the Grandmother's Campaign). Then you need to find a group of interested people to play with and a venue.

Would someone come and help us get started?

Beth can come to run a Poster Party for you or she can come as a guest speaker at a two-hour meeting which we call a Bookmark/Card Presentation. (We are looking for a better name for this.)

What happens at a Bookmark/Card Presentation?

In order to demonstrate the process of dressing one of the figures Beth has designed a Bookmark and a Card. Each participant at the meeting would receive one bookmark and one card which she will dress herself during the meeting. There is a $10.00 fee, $5 of which will be donated to the your designated charity.

Afterwards the Posters Guidelines will help to refresh your memory if you forget a step.

In your Poster Guidelines/Tools section you use a lot of tools that are new to me. Do I have to acquire all of them or is there an easier way to do this?

We have put together a Facilitator's Kit with enough basic equipment for a group of twelve. We hope to be able to rent this out. Let me know if you are interested. We are still working on the logistics of doing this.
