Painting on the skin
Step 1. Decide what medium you are going to use for the skin. Beth used Walnut ink throughout her book but you can use other mediums which may be easier to find.
W&N Burnt umber gouache works well and can give you both light and dark skin tones. Use your piece of scrap paper that came in the kit to test the lightness and darkness of the paint.
A recent discovery is Derwent Inktense watersoluble ink pencils. They are easy to travel with and to use. Just scribble a swatch on your scrap paper and use your brush to pick up the ink. You can mix it on the paper and use it on your poster. #118 Baked Earth and #119 Willow give a pretty good range of colour and can be purchased individually. You may have to do three or four coats for darker skin. Once it dries it is permanent.
Step 2. Painting straight lines along the edges of the skin requires a little care. Remember that the point of the brush is what will give you straight lines so work along the edges with the tip of the brush.
